The Heng hexagram signifies the enduring. Tranquility and peace are long lasting. [Taking] no action is best. The changing of the four seasons is the constant movement of Heaven. The sun and the moon turn round, and give off their light everywhere. The superior man establishes himself without changing his approaches [methods].

When Song Yu took away Han Peng's wife with force, he obtained this hexagram. She became his wife in the end.

King Wen's Judgment: The Heng hexagram signifies there will be success without any blame. It is beneficial [favorable] to persevere. It is beneficial [favorable] to have somewhere to go [venture forth, make changes].

Symbol Tradition: Thunder and Wind symbolize constancy [duration, enduring]. The superior man stands [remains] firm and does not change his ways [direction, method].

Confucius: Heng, everlasting. Everlasting brings success without blame. He who obtains the everlasting way should understand it is favorable both for perseverance and change.

The storm sends the colossal bird into the high sky,
He expects to cover a long, long cloudy path.
And soar with support of the western wind,
From now on, ascent to heights is without hardship.

Six at the fifth line: Constant obedience brings good fortune to a woman, but misfortune to a man.

This line indicates that constant obedience will not bring good fortune.

For an individual of great virtue and merit, the individual is a just, upright, and virtuous man; he may also get the assistance of his obedient wife.

For just an ordinary individual, the individual cannot make decisions by himself and is obedient to others. Or he suffers at home from the shrewdness of his wife.

In such a year, an official invites reproach for he is obsequious to the powerful; a scholar exposes himself to insults for he seeks promotion by luck; and a commoner is not kind at home, and often receives slanders and reproaches.

Three poems for the fourth line:

He bides his time but it has not yet come;
All his painstaking efforts are in vain, he sighs.
He should make changes instead of sticking to old ways,
When the sun is setting, he will feel at ease.

The second:

He wants to catch the bright moon in the well,
And he smoothes the feathers against the wind.
Why does he so foolishly spend his time in vain,
For in the end, nothing is solid and reliable.

The third:

He has caught nothing in hunting,
And has not succeeded in his endeavors.
He has exhausted himself with his clever plans,
And although he has worked hard, he has gained nothing.

Weather: It rains for a long time. It will become clear on the Chinese calendar day of si or wu .

Seeking an official post: It is difficult at first, then easy. He is sure to succeed.

Marriage: There are quarrels in the first marriage. The second marriage is successful. The woman is short with a child. Possibly after the marriage, one of her parents dies. It is only fit to marry a city girl.

Pregnancy: It will be a boy. There is disaster for the mother. If the divination is cast on the Chinese day of you , it can be avoided.

Tomb siting: There is water in front of the tomb. If not, there is a road.

House: It is near the waterside or in the town. It is only appropriate for the family to observe old customs.

Seeking wealth: It is easy to seek in town, but with much worry and care. Be aware of possible disputes.

Expecting a thing: He gains big profits with little cost, but gains little when he expects too much. There is a quarrel. In the government office in town, he may see a noble man and meets with him. Some ghosts or thieves make trouble, but they bring no disaster.

Lost things: The object has been taken away. A child in the northwest saw the living thing was in the forest or field.

Traveling: It is not favorable. Be aware of possible quarrels.

Traveler: He will come by way of a trail. Be aware of quarrels or disputes. If he meets a noble man, the dispute will be resolved.

Dealings: It is successful in the end with the support of a noble man.

Looking for a person: It is better to wait for some time, or to look for him together with someone else.

Calling on a noble man: The letter expresses a cordial welcome, but there are repeated changes for the meeting time. There is a meeting on the Chinese day of wu or you .

Harvest of crops or silk cocoons: It is a bumper one.

Arresting a criminal: He is difficult to catch. The result will come out in three days, or possibly in three years.

Illness: He went to the northwest, and offended the ghost of weapons, the ghost of the wounded and dead, the ghost of those who hanged themselves (committed suicide). His ethereal and corporal souls have been taken away and sold to the god of Wuyou. He feels cold, then feverish, and feels heavy in his four limbs, suffers from stomach reflux, and vomits. When a man bleeds on the fifth of lunar January, there's a disaster of blood loss. Offer sacrifice to the family ancestors, the ghost of weapons, the ghost of those who hanged themselves, the ghost of blood and earth, the god of half day, the god of Wuyou, the god of armor, express thanks to the kitchen god, and to two or three condoling guests who pass through the mourning door of the white tiger.

For a child: Offer sacrifice to the parents of his previous life, the five road boy, the old couple of transformation, the god of half day, the god of Wuyou, the god of armour, drive back the seven demons. Send off the god of stars, then there will be good fortune.

Lawsuit: It is a dispute caused by the inferior man. There is an alarm but no harm. The man with the Chinese radical ["ren" - man] or ["kou" - mouth] in his name helps a lot. Be aware on the Chinese calendar day of you or chou .

Zhou Yafu obtained this hexagram when he was ready to display the battle array. In the end he won the battle.

King Wen's Judgment: The Shi hexagram signifies that an army needs a strong leader and perseverance. With them, there will be good fortune and no blame.

Symbol Tradition: Water contained under the Earth signifies an army. The superior person increases his followers [marshals his forces] by showing benevolence [through generosity] to the common people.

Confucius: Shi means masses of soldiers. That is the reason for the name for the hexagram. Shi is a title or an address for an elder experienced military leader. The way of command in an army lies in the appointment of experienced leaders. Thus there will be good fortune and no blame.

Misfortune comes, but turns out to be a good thing,
Deeds and profits have not yet been won.
When you are at a high and comfortable position,
Do not cling to the hundreds of beautiful flowers.

Six at the third line: It is a misfortune for more commanders to share absolute military power.

This line indicates that underestimation of the enemy forces will invite defeat.

For an individual of great virtue and merit, the individual possesses great talent but weak moral character. He cannot win the support of the people or trust from his subordinates.

For just an ordinary individual, the individual cannot enjoy a long life.

In such an ominous year, he will have more worries and grief, or he will mourn for a parent. If his divined message matches this line will change for the third line of the Sheng hexagram, he will approach a vacant city. If he is not an official yet he will meet no hindrance in promotion. If he is already an official, he will receive an appointment but wait for the vacancy. He who is born in the twelfth lunar month is noble and has good fortune.

Weather: It is certain to be clear. If the sixth or the fifth of the hexagram is reversed, right at midday there will be showers.

Seeking an official post: The official paper is far away in the office, but with a strong support from a noble man, he gets a high post.

House: Three men live in the same house, there are some diseases.

Seeking wealth: It is difficult at first, then it becomes easy.

Tomb siting: There are stones in the tomb, if it is facing the directions of ding (South) and gui (North), it cannot be changed. Two or three sons or grandsons in the family will become noble men in the future.

Looking for a person: There is a sign of hindrance.

Traveler: He has started out. There will be good news about wealth. The message will arrive on the Chinese day of hai .

Dealings: It can be settled on the Chinese day of yin , wu or xu .

Marriage: A city girl or a craftsman acts as a go-between. There is a sign of good fortune for a noble man to get married.

Lost things: It is difficult to find.

Arresting a criminal: There is a false alarm, he can be caught.

Pregnancy: It is a girl. There will be mishap on the labor day. If the fifth line of the hexagram is reversed on the sixth day, there will be a happiness mixed with sadness. It is safe for the baby, not for the mother; if the sixth line of the hexagram is reversed, the mother will be safe, but not the baby. The labor is on the Chinese calendar ren day.

Going out: Going alone will bring good fortune, whereas more people will delay things.

Expecting a thing: It is successful.

Illness: He went to the historic sites and altars in the South and North, and offended the god of the temple, evil ghosts of soldiers and horses, and red imps. They have taken away his ethereal and corporal souls. He has fits of cold and fever, heartache and pains in the abdomen. Offer sacrifice to the god of the front temple, and others, the five way god, the god of plagues, and the god of Eyi, the god of armour, the god of turning corpses, drive away the demon of earth, send off the god of stars.

For a child: Offer sacrifice to the god of half day, the god of Wuyou, the god of white tiger, the god of armour, the five road boy, the parents of his previous life, the gods of the bedchamber, and send away the god of stars.

Lawsuit: If he is a noble man, he will receive blessings. As for others, there is potential for nothing. At first, there are worries and danger, then food and wealth. He should not retreat.
